It’s almost time! Reality TV’s version of interior design, Design Star, is back for its seventh season starting Tuesday, May 29, at 9/8c time on HGTV. Think of it as Survivor meets Better Homes & Gardens, with weekly challenges and eliminations. Only one of the 12 competitors can win and they’re competing for their own show on HGTV.
David Bromstad, host of HGTV’s Color Splash, was the series first season winner and will serve as the contestants’ mentor during this season’s challenges. Genevieve Gorder and Vern Yip will also be back as judges along with celebrity guests. I can’t wait to see who shows up! It’s virtually a who’s who of the design world and just a lot of fun.
This year’s competitors include interior designers, contractors, stylists and artists from all over the United States. Here are three finalists I’ll keep my eye on and my favorite rooms from their portfolios.
Hand-carved, 200-year-old church doors from Mexico create a dramatic headboard in this soothing bedroom by designer Bex Hale. Bex defines her eclectic style as “art eco.”
Set designer and prop stylist Mikel Welch used pops of colors and streamlined furniture to style this Manhattan loft space.
Designer Britany Simon used bold prints and contrasting colors to create this chic dining area on a budget. She designed and built this white Parsons-style table and recovered the homeowner’s existing dining chairs.
