The exterior of the home was designed to mirror a Southern farmhouse. Locally sourced sandstone is stacked to resemble a traditional farmhouse foundation; and a bioswale, designed to draw rainwater away from the foundation, terminates in a rain pond in the front yard.

And the Design Duel Champion is…

I had the honor recently of helping judge the first-ever Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity Design Duel and I could not have enjoyed myself more.

The design firms of Pickard Design Studio and Wilson Associates did a fantastic job redesigning two worthy families’ living and dining rooms using only items from Habitat for Humanity ReStores. Even with only three weeks and a limited budget of $3,000 each, the rooms were completely transformed and now meet the needs of both families.

Vote Now for the Design Duel Champion!

The Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity’s first-ever Design Duel is finished! Now, it’s time for YOU to vote and help select the champion. Visit www.designduel.org to  view “before” and “after” pictures of both families’ rooms, and vote for your favorite redesign. But hurry, the public vote ends at the close of business this Friday, September 23.

The Design Duel challenged two design firms, Packard Design Studio and Wilson Associates, to redesign two worthy families’ living and dining rooms in three weeks using only items from Dallas Habitat’s ReStores and a budget of $3,000.  The Wideman family of Garland and the Thomason family of Mesquite were selected from numerous entries and paired with their interior design firms.

Design Duel Room Makeovers Begin

The votes are in and the two finalists for the Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity’s first-ever Design Duel have been selected! The Wideman family of Garland and the Thomason family of Mesquite are the lucky recipients and have been paired with their interior design firms, Packard Design Studio and Wilson Associates. Now, the battle begins!

The Design Duel will challenge the design firms to redesign both families’ living and dining rooms in three weeks using only items from Dallas Habitat’s ReStores and a budget of $3,000. The redesigns will be revealed and face a public and expert panel’s vote beginning September 20 to determine which firm will win the design championship.

Habitat for Humanity Design Duel: Enter to Win a $3,000 Room Makeover

Here’s a design contest with a twist! Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity is launching its first-ever Design Duel.  The Duel pairs two interior design firms, Pickard Design Studio and Wilson Associates, with two homeowners needing a living-dining room makeover. The twist is all the materials used in the designs will come from Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity ReStores – home improvement stores that offer up to 70 percent off everything from designer lighting to furniture and flooring. So, the $3,000 design budget will go a long way!

Anyone can enter the contest at www.designduel.org or Dallas Area ReStores, but hurry and enter! The entry deadline is July 31, 2011. A judging panel will then select five semi-finalists who demonstrate the strongest need and appeal through their submitted story and photos. Consumers will then vote to select the two finalists on the ReStores section of Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity Facebook page, and a Design Championship will be held on September 16, 2011 to judge the two redesigns in a Design Duel.
